After having Psoriasis for such a long time I have tried a lot of foods some good and some bad. Over time I have worked out what foods can trigger flare ups. Here are some tips that may just help control these flare ups.
Most cereals are fine but choose one that is high in fibre. Some studies have shown that a high fibre diet can be very beneficial to Psoriasis sufferers.
Dairy and Eggs
I myself have never had trouble with products such as milk or eggs but I have read of some Psoriasis patients suffer flare ups when consuming these items. It’s trial and error - If it does not affect you then why stop. This is what makes this such an individual disease.
Fish is one of the best sources of omega 3 and is highly recommend. Oily fish such as Salmon, Tuna, Halibut and Snapper contain omega fatty acids. Remember all fish is good but the old saying fresh is best really does apply. I have always found poultry to be ok i.e. chicken, turkey, and duck. Lamb and veal although red meats are ok but in moderation, steer away from beef (get it – steer away J) I have never had problems with pork but I only eat it occasionally.
I have always found lots of green leafy vegetables beneficial to my psoriasis. Foods like spinach, leafy lettuce, bok choy, broccoli, brussels sprouts etc. Beans, peas, carrots, squash, beetroot cabbage, cauliflower and pumpkin are also great. If you can have at least three meals a week with between 3 to 5 vegetables you are doing ok but more is better. Do not overcook the vegetables (steam if possible) eating raw is also good. Again fresh is best, organic is even better.
The best beverage is water. I try to drink at least two litres a day. Tea is also good but not with caffeine (herbal teas preferred) read the label for additives. Caffeine free coffee is also ok. Homemade juice is fantastic; the best part about it is you can experiment with different fruits and vegetables. It can be a very nutritious drink.
Depending on your taste for desert there are some great choices. Rather than buying premade try making deserts from scratch there are a lot of great recipes online or let your imagination go wild just remember stay away from pastry based deserts and bad chemicals.
Last piece of advice
Everything you try with psoriasis is trial and error you need to find what works for you. This is just general information and there may come a time when you need to seek professional advice. If this is the case don’t leave it too long this can become a serious issue.
